A proper Amsterdam brown café since forever
Prinsengracht 568 · Amsterdam
Café Heuvel has been a familiar face on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam for decades. It is a small corner bar with a great terrace by the canal and the feel of a real brown café where you can just be yourself.
The café is named after its first owner, Jan Heuvel, whose portrait still hangs on the wall. His brother Joop took over, and later Joop's son Pierre ran the place. Since 2019, Paul Bouwman has been running the café together with his team. Long a familiar face in the establishment, Paul is committed to preserving the original atmosphere that the regulars love. The café's character is kept alive by a mix of long-serving staff who know every guest by name and a new generation of barkeepers who bring fresh energy.
Quick service, good beer and that unmistakable Amsterdam vibe. From street sweeper to bank director, everyone sits side by side at the bar. And if you did not already know: David Bowie once mopped this floor after losing a bet with the previous owner.
